August 9th 1969, the Haunted Mansion finally opened but with a very different storyline. Did you know originally our bride, Constance Hatchaway, wasn’t the murderess that we know today but actually the victim by the name of Priscilla.
A well know and feared pirate captain retired quietly to a private life in a seaside town. He changed his name and used some of his ill-gotten booty to make a name for himself and even going as far as getting a young 18 year old Pricilla to marry him and bear him many children. Like another beastly character, he only gave her one restriction in their new home… stay out of the attic!
As the familiar saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. On her wedding day Pricilla decided to explore the attic and upon finding a locked truck, forces it open. Inside she finds documents and souvenirs from her husbands previous life as a pirate. He is enraged and in such fear that his secret may be revealed to the community, they argue and she is thrown from the window to her death!
At this point in the ride, after the attic scene, you begin the downward decent like the falling bride. At the bottom of the drop you see the shaking caregiver of the graveyard. He is looking at you because you have become a new ghost to join the others in the cemetery.
Pricilla’s ghost haunted him so mercilessly that the only way he could find peace was to hang himself. They were both bound to the house and attracted other ghosts, even those who had come to celebrate their wedding that would never be completed.
The storyline was reimagined in 2006 where the victim bride becomes the gold-digging bride Constance Hatchaway. She was inspired by the bride character from the stretching room portraits.
One last thing to look for next time you think of joining the 999 happy haunts, watch the pictures of the bride and groom throughout the attic scene. With each photo Constance gains a pearl necklace symbolizing her growing wealth. Happy anniversary to one of my can’t miss rides! 52 years looks good on you ;)
